BIO

Julia da Mota (Brazil, 1988) lives and works in São Paulo. She received her Master's Degree in Visual Arts from the University of São Paulo (USP) and earned a B.Arch degree from the University of São Paulo/ENSA-Paris La Villette. Drawing inspiration from Minimalist Abstraction and Brutalism in architecture through painting and printmaking, Da Mota explores relationships between color, form, and matter to create works that come from a phenomenological approach towards the female body, space, and from her intimate experiences. Her practice addresses the possible links between man-built space, the idea of landscape, and their limits. In 2021, da Mota attended a residency program at Pivô, São Paulo, one of the most prominent in Brazil. In 2019, she was a Project Keyholder at East London Printmakers, UK, and an artist-in-residence at Lava!, Residência foNTE, São Paulo. In 2018, she was part of LAMB Projects’ Billingbear Farm Residency in Berkshire, UK. Her work has been featured in exhibitions throughout Brazil in São Paulo, Ribeirão Preto, Belém do Pará, Belo Horizonte, and Blumenau; and also abroad in London, Palma de Mallorca in Spain, Alijó in Portugal, and Chamalières in France. Her works are present in collections in Brazil, the UK, the USA, Argentina, Portugal, Spain, Australia, and France.
